Spinal Intervention

NewSouth NeuroSpine is not your ordinary medical practice, because our focus is not a single specialty but rather a single purpose. Our physicians represent four medical specialties all aimed at seeing a patient through to complete healing. Those four specialties include neurosurgery, orthopaedic spine surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and spinal intervention.

Spinal intervention is a complex specialty involving extensive education, training, and experience. The NS2 physicians in our spinal intervention division have at least five years of additional education and training after finishing medical school. What could draw young medical students to this kind of rigorous commitment? In the case of Drs. Summers and Dr. Laseter, it is the love of people.

Meet Our Spinal Intervention Specialists

Dr. Jeff Summers heads the division of spinal intervention of NS2. A graduate of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Dr. Summers completed his internship and residency in anesthesiology at Brooke Army Medical Center. It was during this training that he realized providing anesthesia during surgeries limited his ability to interact with his patients. This desire to directly and significantly impact the lives of his patients led Dr. Summers to further specialize in spine intervention. He completed a fellowship in spine intervention at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Then, Dr. Summers finished his training with an additional fellowship in advanced spine intervention at the Pain Relief Institute and Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Walton, England.

Returning to his home state of Mississippi, Dr. Summers has been both in private practice and an instructor at UMMC. All of his experiences led him to join NS2 in the spring of 2008, as Director of the Spinal Intervention Division.

Dr. Jeff Laseter grew up in Mississippi, a son of a Methodist pastor. As a teenager he volunteered at the Ellisville State School for the Mentally Handicapped, and through that experience, knew he wanted to spend his life helping people as a physician.

His journey began at the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree. As Dr. Laseter continued his education, he also continued refining his specialty. He completed his internship in general surgery at Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, AL; and his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He completed a fellowship in spine intervention at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic where he was selected Chief Fellow. Once his education was complete, Dr. Laseter returned to practice in Mississippi, joining NS2 in 2008.

Both Dr. Summers and Dr. Laseter exemplify the NS2 philosophy of patient first medicine. At NewSouth NeuroSpine, the specialized training of our physicians leads to specialized care of our patients.
